First World War Poster Collection

Propaganda posters were a powerful medium for influencing public opinion. They covered recruitment, war savings, charities and the role of women. The posters were intended to make the army look exciting, instil a sense of duty and even make men feel guilty if they had not joined up. Browse this nationally important collection.

Tom Marshall Collection

Local author Don Watson has been documenting this unique collection of labour history material and a list of our holdings is now available to browse. The collection was compiled by Tom Marshall, a former Gateshead librarian, now deceased. Material covers union history, miners' lockouts, poverty, unemployment and women at work. The items are available to view by appointment at Gateshead Central Library.

Trevor Ermel Collection

Trevor Ermel has worked with Gateshead Libraries for many years making copy negatives and prints from old photographs in the Local Studies Collection. He is also a keen photographer in his own right and has taken pictures in Gateshead from the 1960s onwards. These iconic images capture everyday life in Gateshead and are now available to view online.

The Joan Hewitt Felling Archive

Joan Hewitt is a local historian who compiled a wealth of material relating to Felling, Heworth, Pelaw and surrounding areas. This material is gradually being sorted and catalogued by library staff. We have digitised some of the most useful material, allowing you to view and download sixteen folders of articles and images for personal or educational use.
